Initially a business partnership that serviced and repaired televisions and offered some furniture, the Barr’s bought out ownership of the business in 1964. Though several furniture stores already existed in the market, the Barr’s were convinced that they could offer a “better value” than the existing stores. Over time, Barr’s began to devote more and more floor space to furniture, and their “better value” concept made them one of the top furnishings dealers in the area. Such success allowed them to expand by opening a second location in 1988, this one in the heart of Shelbyville.
